Five to seven member teams solve their choice of five long-term problems. Some problems are technical and others artistic, such as building a balsa wood structure to hold weight, creating a robot to perform tasks, creating poetry, skits, painting, or artifacts from times past. Teams present their solutions in an eight minute performance at a regional competition. First place teams advance to a state competition, then to world finals. At competitions, teams are also given a “spontaneous problem” which challenges them to brainstorm a solution to a hands-on or verbal problem in a short period of time.
